We have had a busy couple of weeks around here. Mike had a back country ski day and and I took the kids and met a friend Ande at the Pacific Science Center and for lunch the first weekend in February.
I have been in and out of the dentists office trying to get a crown, than ran into possibly needing a root canal, and now the Endodontist wants me to wait a few more weeks to see if the pain goes away. Mike was traveling in Montana for 3 days and life as a single parent is down right hard/exhausting. I found myself using Skype to have my mom watch the kids so I could grab things here or there, seriously that extra set of hands is huge. By 6 I was begging for it to be 8:00 and bedtime. We made it and it really wasn't as bad as the paragraph above made it sound. By Thursday night I was spent and so ready to have my other 1/2 back and be in a normal routine.
Amidst the normal chaos that is our lives, it has also been a long couple of weeks; waiting, wondering and questioning what the next step in our future will be. So what exactly is going on?
The beginning of January we heard that as we had suspected Mike's company was reorganizing nation wide again. This is how we made it to Seattle 2 years ago and we have had a wonderful adventure here. We are not certain it is over yet either, but when the company is reorganizing nation wide some people will keep their current jobs, some will move into a different job, relocate, and some will ultimately be let go. So we will be in one of the situations previously listed and only time will tell. Since the announcement we have been waiting and waiting and doing our best to "be normal” and not worry about what our future holds. It is also a time that we must evaluate where we are and what we want to do, do we stay or do we go is the real question, and will anything even change is another one. Seattle is starting to feel more like home, but yet with us needing to talk about the what ifs we have started discussing when and if we would like to get back to Colorado or Minnesota.
That being said "being normal," is hard when you know in a month or two you could be packing everything up and moving. It is almost like your life is temporarily put on hold, but it isn't, until you know more. You are suppose to keep on keeping on like there isn't this giant elephant of "what ifs" sitting in your chest. It is a hard limbo state to be in, especially for me. It is a lot of pressure on Mike as he feels like he is carrying the whole family, which he is in a sense. I am a planner a someone who likes to make lists and to check things off, not knowing what is going to happen is hard. Yes, I know you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow or next week, but this limbo is excruciatingly difficult. Mike and I go over different scenarios and seriously there is no resolve until we know more from his current job. Damn, the what ifs can slowly drive you crazy. When not talking about it with our friends and family, there isn’t much time with our life to spend much time thinking or talking about it, which is probably a good thing. It does however seem to be the all consuming issue in our life at this point. While we wait we are trying not to worry too much. We have been putting our things here in order and getting ready for the just in case. Ultimately we have one another, our families are supporting us and our health. No matter what and where we are as long as we are together we will be fine. Until then this place of limbo stinks, but we are coming to the end of the limbo phase.
I was scrolling down Facebook today and a friend had this saying up. I thought hmmm this reminds me of Mike and I.
A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of water?"
Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.
She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I ...hold it. If I hold it for a minute,it's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything."
It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down!
And iIm going to add pick up a beer!
Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed for whatever path is in store for us, we are ready for whatever happens and excited to know what our future holds…
