A week in our life…

Bridget snuck some pictures of me snuggling Elin while we were in Denver.  I have to be honest, when I am behind the camera a lot some of these “every day things” seem to sneak by us.  I am more often than not in my “mom clothes” so looking presentable is also a plus!  So I am always glad when I have pictures with me and the kids.

Elin has been taking longer and longer naps which leaves Thomas and I some alone quiet time.  He loves to work on his giant dinosaur puzzle or his smaller car/truck/train/fire engine puzzles.

Sick baby girl…We had a not so fun week of a stomach bug.  The picture on the left shows just how cute she looked snuggled up.  Holding onto her favorite chew toy.  The picture on the left was while I was waiting for more puke.  Poor peanut.

Puddin’ Painting with 2 Littles

In my world the messier the better (with an easy cleanup).  With Elin being sick we had been stuck in the house a lot and I was feeling the need to be creative.  So here was my solution.  A few cups of pudding, some food coloring, and spoons for paint brushes and we had 2 very happy messy kids.  Thomas loved painting and making handprints, Elin just wanted to eat as much as she could of this sugar filled treat.  I did this with Thomas when he was little, but with 2 kiddos this was twice as much fun.  Both Mike and I had giant smiles on our faces.  We also called both Grandma’s on facetime so they could get in on the fun.  January 20137

If your trying this yourselves, know that a good mat in the tub is essential, as the pudding makes the tub very slippery.   Another good thing to remind yourself is that it is all able to be cleaned up.  I try not to give the kids the freedom to be messy and then try to contain it, I just try to manage my words (I don’t every say “no” during art) and allow them to have fun as long as they are following the rules and being safe.

thomis-isms

Over the last couple months, I have had this post and continued to add our favorite things Thomas says and does.  It might be boring to read if you haven’t seen or heard him say some of this things, but to us they are priceless. So here they are in no particular order…

“Mama your daughter is calling you”
”Mom are you hearin my words” (I guess I have said this a time or two)
"Mama/dat come here I need somethin’”

“Dada” has turned into “Dat”
”I eat it all up into my belly button” (when he is full from eating)
”Look I'm fuper big and tall now” (with arms as high up as they will go)

“Stelly Mc Dabelly”

“Run for your lives”-We have no idea where he came up with this one.

“your welbum” your welcome

“go out and give me some pri-cy” (when he needs to use the bathroom to do his business”

“Stella get out of my business”

“I love you fo much”

“safe” when Elin falls down

“my can do do” (I can do it)

“well that makes sense” when we tell him about something and it “makes sense to him.”

Denver

We took off for Denver on New Years Eve morning. Whew, flying to Denver with so much anticipation, not because of our kiddos, but with the fact that we would be starring reality in its face...slightly overwhelming.

The kiddos both did great on the plane and both Mike and I commented that that extra hour, typical of our flights to MN, really made a difference. Two hours was quick and easy as pie, as that last hour heading into Minnesota, seems to have us always trying to occupy the kiddos to keep them chill and mellow. So whew, flight done. We landed in Denver and I as we walked through the airport I looked at Mike and said “welcome home!” Guess the city of Seattle is still feeling like an extended vacation, on the other hand, it also feels like home.
Uncle Pat Pat picked us up at the airport and the whirl wind started. We grabbed lunch, headed to pick up the car we were using and went to drop our stuff off. I quick ran an grabbed some party supplies, food an a few baby essentials and then we were off to hit reality head on.
Our first stop was at Donny and Katie's house. Katie was spending her NYE with her family but wanted us to stop over so there we were. We walked into their house, all warm and cozy as it always is and were greeted by her family. After saying our quick hellos I went to see Katie who was in her room. What more can you do for a friend who is so completely devastated than wrap your arms around her, cry, and repeatedly say I'm so so so sorry, and cry some more. More so than that I wanted to be able to tell her it would all be “ok,” reassure her that life would soon “go back to normal.” and that this was all a really horrific bad dream. To be honest it looked like at any moment Donny would walk back through the door, minus all the flowers scattered throughout the house, his stuff was still in its normal places. Shoes by the front door, wallet and hat on his dresser, clothes in the closet, it was all waiting for him to get home, she was waiting for this to be a dream, damn reality is daunting. Again that instant I was confronted with the frailness of life and its uncertainty. We both kept saying this isn't right, it isn't fair. Katie's heart is broken and unlike a typical broken heart from a break up no amount of anything will fix this. Time will help her heal, but there is going to be a long road ahead of her. After composing myself, as the kiddos were with us, we left Katie’s room. I knew Mike was so nervous to see her and was very worried about what he was going to do or say. You know, in life, it is never fun seeing your partner in crime hurt so bad and not know how to “fix it for him either.” He too wrapped his arms around Katie and cried.

While we were there we were able to chat a bit, touch base on everything and make a plan for Katie and I to get out and grab coffee on Thursday.  After spending spending a little over an hour with Katie and her family.  We were then off to our 1st New Years Eve party at Bridget and Shenan's house. It was good to get to see some more close friends and family.  We also got to see Auntie Lara or (Warda) and her shiny new ring.  She and Uncle Pat Pat got engaged on Christmas Eve, it was all sparkly and new, and very very pretty.  Thomas ran his show and really enjoyed playing with Pat and Shenan. Elin smiled away and hung out with the ladies talking, with all the new faces around, she was not letting her Mom out of arms reach.January 20131
After some time at the Duffy/Ganje's we were headed back to the Rocks house to ring in the New Year.  We didn't want to be on the roads too late, plus we were all already exhausted from the long day of travel.
Once at the Rocks we tried to get the kids to stay sleeping, Thomas was game, Elin wasn't. So Elin watched the ball drop with us.  It was her 1st NYE after all and she was ready to Party! Then Thomas took his turn and was awake from 1:30 am to 4 am-seriously-it was chaos!   We all started 2013 off sleepy!
New Years Eve day we enjoyed a calm morning with the Rocks and then they headed up skiing and we headed over to some friends for football and chillaxin'. We wanted to get the kiddos a good nap, so we fed them, packed em' in the car and we drove. Shortly after we started our drive they were both sleeping and Mike and I could reminisce about Denver, life, family and Donny. We drove past our old house in Arvada. The house and neighborhood still look the same, but the Aspen trees have gotten much bigger. We then headed downtown an picked up some Protos's pizza, seriously there is no pizza like Protos! It is one of our favorites.  We then drove past the Oxford where we were married. Before heading down to the Lien's in Highlands Ranch. Thomas was so excited and loved trying to keep up with Colton, who is just over a hear older than he is. He also liked playing with Carsyn and Elin was happy to be in the mix too.  Elin and Auntie Lara also got in some good play time together.

Too quickly it was time to pack everyone up and head back to our "home" at the Rock's house. We stopped quick for dinner with Pat and Lara and then 5 minutes into our final drive both kids were sound asleep.
Wednesday, Mike had to go into work at the Denver Coca Cola office, so the kids and I were on our own.  We heading to the zoo to meet Crystal and see all the animals. We had planned on meeting our friends Jess, Zander, and Leo, but they were stuck at home with the flu bug.  Next time!  I never pass up a chance at the zoo, although it was cold, the sun was shining and it was a great morning at the zoo.  It was equally  great to catch up with Crystal, as we missed her the last time we were in town, and have an extra hand with the kiddos. We saw lots of monkey action this morning at the zoo. The cutest thing was the little orangutan kissing his/her mama! Hard to not see the likeness in ourselves and monkeys!  In fact, I totally related to the orangutan when the keeper said that next to humans, their attachment with mother/child is the next longest?  He said they nurse for 2/3 years and then are with their mom very closely until at least age 6.  I made the joke that that mama and I could compare stories!  After lunch the wind picked up and we all decided it was cold and time to head home for naps.January 20132
After naps, which went through our scheduled play date with Angela and Audrey :-(, this is the hardest part for us about being in Denver.  We pack so much in and try to see everyone and inevitably we miss people.   It is hard but it happens and we always are bummed, but next time hopefully it will work out!  Anywho, after nap we packed up and headed to Sushi Hai. This was a last minute impromptu dinner where if you could meet us great if not, no worries. Some could make it, others could not but we ended up having a good sized group.  We ate, talked, and laughed.  Best part of the night for me was having so many of our close friends together at one time.  For a minute, both Mike and I were able to just enjoy Denver, and forget why we were really there.  January 20133  Watching Lilli and Thomas, run, giggle and dance together was tender and special.  These two are really such great friends and after a year they just picked up without missing a beat...friendship at it’s finest.

Thursday we packed up at the Rock’s, Mike headed into work, and the kiddos and I went and spent the morning and afternoon with Katie.  We went to her house and then walked to a coffee shop, where we met Bridget, and laughed, cried, and were just there for Katie.  When we got back to her house, her Mom and Step Dad left to head back to their house to replenish their clothes and tend to the house.  Katie, has had a wonderful network of family, who has minus 20 minutes been with her day and night since Donny died.  She also had told me that being alone was the hardest part because that is when she would normally call him, and then it would hit her that she couldn’t again.  Ugh, I just cannot imagine.  Besides being present, I so wished that there was something more I could have done.  Katie had a snuggly little chair for Thomas to lay and rest and watch cartoons.  After the first 20 minutes, Thomas was shoes, pants and socks off comfy as he was at home and helping she and I by being such a great little guy.  Katie and I looked at pictures and talked about their honeymoon to Hawaii and the life they were so excitedly planning together.  A life that one day at a time she will continue to live for both of them.  I tell you what, I don’t know how she is/was doing it, but she showed me what true strength and courage look like.   To be respectful to her and her journey through the grief, I won’t post a lot of what we talked about while we were together.  I do wish and hope that I never have to listen to a friend talk about any of this stuff until we are all much much older and grey, with many good years and memories behind us.  Life, sometimes it is just uncertain and unfair.  Thankfully, Katie’s faith, ours too, is strong and we know Donny is in a better place, but damn, she misses the love of her life and we miss our friend.  January 20138

Thursday also happened to be my 31st birthday.  I received a lot of wonderful phone calls, texts, emails and facebook messages all were very much appreciated.  Thursday evening we celebrated with dinner from Carmine’s On Penn (a favorite take out place by our old house in Wash Park) and topped it off with yummy ice cream cake complete with candles.  It was a wonderful dinner with friends.  After dinner while we were getting ready for bath time, we heard giggling come from the kitchen.  Screen Captures3We walked into see Thomas and his accomplice in crime in the kitchen licking off more frosting.  Their giggles, the baths that ensued, dancing and running through the house and the complete joy that these little beings showed was a wonderful way to help close the evening.  Mike and Tim headed off to hockey and Allison and I got the little ones to sleep.  We then had 35 minutes to chill together while holding the little ones before Thomas had me back up.  He was not feeling well and I couldn’t get him comfy until I pulled out the medicine.  Boo, thankfully after a dose of Advil he slept until morning, but once again, the new germs in Colorado had him sneezing with a stuffy nose.   After having breakfast and play time we then spent the rest of the morning doing kiddy yoga and letting the babes enjoy Studio Soma.  It is always a highlight to see Thomas and Lilli together in that dance studio.  It was fantastic to watch the two of them run together and play.  Elin and Gabe also loved crawling and playing.  Elin loved dancing and swaying to the music as well.  527399_573877542626985_1811561647_n Collages2Friday after breakfast, Mike had some work to do and a lunch scheduled with Reid and Dan.  After Soma, Mike took DSC01764Thomas to go for a nap ride and pick up Pat from the airport and Elin and I rested and napped back at the Bennet house.  Then we made and had dinner again and before long, after much indecisiveness, we were off to a bar to meet some friends.  It was a perfect place as their was a ski ball machine for Thomas to play while we caught up, reminisced, and celebrated Donny. January 20139 DSC01767It was a hard night out with friends, but a night we will always remember.  After far too many games of ski ball for the little guy and possibly one too many beers for the big guy we headed home, holding hands a little tighter, tears flowing, talking some more about our memories.  Humf, even writing this is taking me back to that moment, the streets the memories and the deep sense of loss that both Mike and I share.

Collages3Saturday morning we woke up, had breakfast, packed up and then the guys took Lilli and Thomas to the park while the little ones slept and I got ready.  Then it was time for us to head to the church to formally say goodbye to our friend.  Tim and Allison were kind enough to take care of Thomas while we were away.  They did a great job of keeping him comfortable, getting him a nap, and then calming him down when he was upset that Mom and Dad were not there when he woke up.  Thanks you two, so very very much. Collages4 charmElin came along with us and napped most of the service in her carrier.  Katie reminded me of Jackie Kennedy with her stoic beauty while she carried the ashes of her husband to the alter.  The priest who had married them 4 months prior officiated and was also moved to tears.  Donny’s father and brother spoke and eulogized their son and brother.  There was not a dry eye in the room and all of our hearts ached for our own personal loss and the loss of the others, mainly his wife, brother, and parents.  As a bag piper played Irish hymns everyone drove away to one of Donny’s favorite bars, Earls, to celebrate his life.  It was impossible for me to not have a flash back to watching Donny and Katie drive away, newly married, 4 months prior.

IMG_4061We were able to go to Earls without Thomas for a bit while he napped snuggled in with Tim.  Half way into our first beer we got a call that he was up and not particularly happy.  So we headed up to get him and say our “see you soon’s” to the Bennet family.   Thomas and Lilli were both sad about leaving one another, as were we all.  IMG_4062We hopefully will see them sooner rather than later!  Then it was back to Earls and before long we headed over to Uncle Pat and Auntie Lara’s house.  We then were going to go over to another buddies house, but ended up pulling the plug on that idea.  We were all exhausted both emotionally and physically, so we decided that it was in the best interest of the kiddos to stay put.  Thomas and Elin got some good time in with their cuzzy puppies Maggie and Andy and Uncle and Auntie.   Before we knew it it was time to head to the airport and head back to Seattle.

Hard to say goodbye after such a heartbreaking loss.  Hard to head back to Seattle like everything is normal.   We both greatly miss Denver and all the family and friends who are like family that we have here.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Elin is 8 months

January 2013Time is quickly going by and Elin seems to be growing up quick, too quick for her own good sometimes. She continues to be a really happy, smiley, bright eyed little girl. Her great grandmother, Nana Banana, calls her her little bright eyes and we all think it is a perfect fit.  Elin is down right happy to be around and is content to do whatever, which typically means hanging out with Thomas and doing whatever he lets her.

IMG_8390Speaking of her brother, Elin is down right crazy about him, I say this every month but it is so true! She continues to want to be just like him and loves playing with him on his train table or with his toys/trucks. Sharing is a work in progress and just the last few days she has started to "yell/scream" at him or us if she is upset or a toy is taken and she wants it back. She is going to need to be able to stick up for herself with him around.
In general she is pretty happy to talk or sing your ear off. I have a feeling she inherited the talking gene from her mommy! She loves to bounce around the kitchen, or anywhere else, that has music playing.   She will wave “hi” and is starting to do the same for “bye,” will say “mama” and “dada” and has a lot of babble sounds in her growing vocabulary.  She also has a very loud and high pitch scream that she uses to get your attention and tell you to fix it now or else.

She has been crawling everywhere and cruising along IMG_3576furniture now for most of the month and loves her ability to get around. She also loves to play in a kneeling or semi kneeling/bum siting position or with her legs off to the side.  She's still getting the hang of walking behind toys, but the grin on her face can't fool how awesome she thinks she is while trying to do so.
She has also figured out how to get herself down from standing without just needing to let go and plop.  Such a relief and makes her standing and cruising along furniture much less dangerous.  She has also found a new love for crawling up and down small things such as her chair, boxes, up and onto the trampoline and the stairs.  She just maybe able to keep up with Thomas before we know it.IMG_3078

She continues to enjoy trying new foods and has found a new love for "drinks" of water and tastes of our food. This is how Mike describes her eating one of our foods, she goes in for a huge bite, gets a crumb, then chews like she has a giant mouth full. I have started to give her soft finger foods and she thinks they are ok. She still likes mostly puréed or chunky purées of food. (Side note-she and Thomas couldn't be more opposite eaters at this age he wanted nothing to do with “baby food”-here I am so thankful for my background in feeding therapy!). Neither of the kiddos had/have anything wrong I just find that my background helps me see what they might like, understand more of what is going on, and be able to see what we should try to feed next.IMG_3639
The last time I had Elin into the doctor I mentioned her bruises. With the kiddos being fair skinned it seems that any type of scratch/bump/bruise looks really terrible. Anyway, she suggested I increase my intake of Iron and start feeding Elin some iron rich foods. I haven't noticed much of a change but Elin sure likes having meat (turkey, chicken, beef) in her diet. She has now had many different foods but her favorites are: banana, pears, oatmeal, small pieces of bread, carrots, spinach n pears, butternut squash and sweet potatoes.  IMG_8240
E is still taking between 2 and 3 naps a day. Which are pretty flexible depending on how the day is working out. She continues to sleep the longest if she is being held or is sleeping in "her spot" next to me for naps.  At night she goes to bed between 7-8:30 and then sleeps waking a few times to eat and waking up for the day between 7:30-8. We still have fluke nights here and there where she will be up for 45 minutes between 2-4 a.m., but we have found that is usually due to a wet diaper, toots, or other tummy/teeth troubles. Thank goodness because those nights make me soo tired, Mike too!

IMG_3559No new teeth this month and she has 7 total (4 top and 3 bottom) and we are holding off on our trip to the doctor until after we get home from Denver next week.

Mitch the Snitch

December 2012

Mitch, our elf, was a hit again this year.  Thomas was pretty excited with some of Mitch’s antics and others he was down right upset about.  Sharing, I tell you is a hard one!  So after Mitch was in his garbage truck and he was a bit upset about it, we decided that this year was still a little too young for too much toy craziness.  We did though have fun with a zip line, flour angel, a mini marshmallow fight with Buzz Light Year.  In the chaos of December, I forgot to get pictures of him with his skis on, the morning we went skiing, and hanging around the house in different places.  Mitch left Christmas morning, after delivering some very special running shoes for his buddy Thomas.  We can’t wait to see him again next year and until then hope he enjoys building toys and his vacation days!

Christmas

Christmas morning I woke up to find Mike was already out in the living room waiting to see the kids reactions.  I was the next up, and the kiddos were happily snoozing away.  Too funny, maybe next year like us, they will be too excited to sleep.

Anyway, once awake we reminded Thomas that he needed to check if Santa had brought he and Elin anything.  He hurried into the living room and saw that there was a present wonderland. December 20126

That is when the morning started.  Elin was much more enthralled with the wrapping paper and Thomas moved quickly into his presents and wanted to start playing with each one.  We took our time playing with Santa’s toys, then Skyping with the Laschen side of the family and opening a few gifts, before having breakfast and Elin took her morning nap.  Then it was more present opening, and more present opening.  We were all well spoiled with the gifts we had under the tree.  After lunch and naps we started a fire and continued to play and open gifts.  It was a long lazy day of playing and it was so nice to not have to leave the house.

Admittedly, it was hard to be away from our own families, and even harder to not let them see all the excitement when the kiddos opened their gifts.  Being home and “home” for Christmas has its pros and cons.   Maybe we will be on an every other year schedule..only time will tell what next year brings.  Hope everyone had a great Christmas with those they love.  December 20128Mike’s Mom, Nana Kathy also sent the kids their Christmas ornaments.  This year Thomas got a truck stocking and his one from last year was a Otter.  Elin got a bright pink stroller for her first Christmas ornament.   They are all beautiful and so much fun to put on the tree.  Thomas loved looking at his ornaments and showing everyone “his own” ornaments.    We also put the kiddos handprints on the tree skirt.  It is so fun to see the little hands and how much they are growing from year to year. I had my camera out and just had to capture the “cutest sad face around.”  Elin is quite expressive and getting a good set of lungs on her too.  She loves to scrunch up her nose as she starts to show you she is upset.  Might be a face only a Mother/Father or Grandparent could love!?December 20127

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve Eve, Thomas and I busily made Christmas cookies for Santa. Lets just say this is a much better morning activity for his mama, as my idea of making cookies and his seemed to clash a bit.  After taking a breath and starting over with a new sprinkle plan we were cookie making machines.  After all was said and done the cookies looked fantastic and tasted great too..we hope Santa likes them as much as we did!December 20121
Christmas Eve morning the kiddos and I started to prep food for dinner. While Elin napped Thomas was the big helper and we got the potatoes peeled and sliced. He was more than happy to help with his "sharp knife" or small butter knife.
Then it was time for some more playing and a surprise, Mike was able to get out of the office a little early.  He had used up most of his vacation over our week back in Minnesota, so he had to go in on Christmas Eve, boo.  At least he was able to get home early and have lunch with us.  After lunch, we took a family trip to the baseball fields to get some energy out, and get a little vitamin D, in one of the few “sun breaks” we get in Seattle.  Thomas is getting quite good at hitting the ball, or his Dad is getting good at pitching, either way it is fun to watch.  He will hit the ball and then happily run the bases,  to the pitchers mound or dug out yelling home run.   On this particular video, Stella even joins in the fun.

Then it was home for more food prep and getting ourselves ready for Christmas Eve Mass.  After Elin got on her Mrs. Claus dress I couldn’t resist taking pictures of her adorableness.  She has just loved having the Christmas tree to play with and try to eat, so it was the perfect set up. December 20125Max and Amy arrived just before we left to take over the cooking detail and we were out the door.  Mass was good, Elin sang along the whole time and Thomas did his best to follow along.  After mass we got home and were greeted by our dinner guests.  We were joined by Max, Amy, Jenny and Jaime for our festivus.  December 20122As with most things, at our house, dinner was behind schedule.  We all collectively took turns cooking ,visiting, playing and occupying the kids.December 20124

Dinner and the company were both wonderful.  After great conversation and cleaning up we were in full melt down bedtime mode.  Thomas had skipped a nap and was having a rough time, over well, over the fact that he wanted to tell us that he wanted pumpkin pie before bed. After a full piece of pie, he wrote his letter to Santa and set out the cookies before heading to bed.  Mike and I then got everything ready for Santa’s arrival.
