Thomas started soccer practice and this week he completed his 3rd session. The first 2 sessions have not gone very smoothly. He has been very shy, nervous about his lack of “knowing what to do,” and has wanted me to hold his hand while he practices.
I have no problem holding his hand, and there is another little guy out there with his mom too, but running around with 10 3-5 year olds holding a 20 lbs weight is a little difficult. Not only that, I know that once over his hump Thomas can do great as he is able to physically do all the tasks they are asking.
So in comes Bampa Jim and Nana Nancy, we had been keeping them in the loop on what was going on at practice. On the 2nd Friday before practice, Thomas told me he didn’t have all the stuff that the “big guys” had. After further exploration I found out that he wanted the tall soccer socks and felt like he wasn’t ready. Not going to lie, some of the older kids are good, fast, and crazy wild when they “scrimmage” at the end of the practice. So anyway while Grandpa was on a shopping trip he got Thomas’ gear and mailed it to him with a little pep talk note.
We got the package on Wednesday and the minute we opened the package Thomas wanted his gear on. He had to fall asleep in his cleats and then put the rest of the pads immediately when he woke up. He wore them to class on Thursday morning to show his teacher and took them off for an hour for lunch. The little guy was more than ready to be “super Thomas” on Friday at soccer. After filling up on some eggs on his super Thomas plate he was ready to go. It worked after about 10 minutes of holding my hand he was able to participate. Not only did he participate he had a blast and was so excited and proud of himself, so we Mike and I. He has 3 weeks left in this session. Can’t wait to see how he ends this “season.”
